The Green New Dance Party
A fun, family-friendly celebration uplifting the work of Dorchester environmental justice organizations will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Nightingale Community Garden, 512 Park St.
Enjoy music, food, dancing and guest speakers and learn how to get involved in local efforts around sustainable food, green energy, transportation equity and more.

UMass Boston Beacon 5K
Join alumni, faculty, staff, students, corporate sponsors and friends for UMass Boston Alumni Engagement's signature fall event: the Beacon 5K at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3.
Choose your own adventure. Join them on UMass Boston’s campus for a run/walk on the scenic Harbor Walk or join “virtually” at a location of your choosing.
In-person participants can choose to participate competitively as a timed runner or may run/walk at their own pace. Even if not interested in running/walking, join them for the after-party.
A donation of $25 per attendee to either the Krystle Campbell Scholarship Fund or the Young Alumni Council Scholarship is suggested.
Registration includes: Entry to the 5K with a chipped bib to time progress; the opportunity to win a $100 gift card to UMass Boston’s bookstore; admission to the after-party with lunch and activities; and a UMass Boston 5K t-shirt.

Love Serving Autism tennis program
The Love Serving Autism tennis program will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Sundays from Oct. 3 through Nov. 7 at the Sportsman’s Tennis Center, 950 Blue Hill Ave. There will be two groups: one for ages 5 to 10 and one for ages 11 to 18.
Love Serving Autism’s mission is to expand life skills, especially functional communication, through multidisciplinary specialized therapeutic tennis instruction to increase community inclusion and independence of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Challenges.
The goal is for the participants to apply their newly learned skills throughout the community, including school, workplace, social/recreational gatherings, and home settings. The program provides education and training to coaches and tennis professionals for an adaptive tennis specialization in the industry.

ConRes Colloquium Series
The ConRes Colloquium Series, hosted by The Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security and Global Governance, will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at UMass Boston Campus Center, 3rd Floor, Room 3540, 100 William T. Morrissey Blvd.
How do locals understand and measure peace in villages in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Colombia or other contexts affected by war or violence? How can this knowledge assist in the design of peacebuilding initiatives and also inform an understanding of their success?
The increasing academic focus on bottom-up approaches to peace emphasizes local, contextual understandings of peace and conflict dynamics, but people struggle to elicit this contextual knowledge and struggle further to measure it.
This presentation, presented by Pamina Firchow, outlines a community-centered, participatory research approach that produces participatory statistics – The Everyday Peace Indicators (EPI).

LivingRoom Conversations VI: Truth & Reconciliation
Nelson Mandela said, “In the end, reconciliation is a spiritual process, which requires more than just a legal framework. It has to happen in the hearts and minds of people.”
This guide builds on Mandela’s vision of reconciliation by inviting participants to share what is happening in their hearts and minds within the context of racial justice. Truth challenges and liberates people. Reconciliation opens the door to working together for a brighter future. Truth and reconciliation together offer a pathway toward a world without racism. What would that world look like? What do people need to do and talk about in order to get there?

On your mark, get set … Run Wild with Zoo New England’s first virtual 5K series.
Join the pack and set out for a run, walk or stroll on a route of your choosing while providing support for Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo’s animals.
The third race, “Run Wildest 5K, 10K, Half Marathon,” will take place in October (registration is open).

Boston Lights: A Lantern Experience
Spanning the 72 acres of Franklin Park Zoo, Boston Lights: A Lantern Experience, presented by National Grid, will feature more than 60 new large-scale displays comprised of hundreds of colorful lanterns from 6 to 10:30 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 11.
Guests can walk through a luminous 66-foot-long shark tunnel, dramatic entrance arches, radiant flower gardens and traditional Asian lantern scenes. Glimmering butterflies, whimsical ocean scenes, and a majestic 197-foot-long dragon light up the night sky.

Big Sister mentoring
Since 1951, the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston continues to make and support one-to-one mentoring relationships between thousands of women and girls each year.
The Big Sister professional staff matches a girl between the ages of 7 and 15 with a woman who is at least 20 years old, based on shared preferences and interests and continues to provide award-winning (virtual) support and guidance to each Big Sister, Little Sister, and Little Sister’s family.
