‘Navy Yard Off Map’

Charlestown is a neighborhood of rich, layered history. Through thoughtful observation and exploration, people can see the old and untouched, the drastically changed, and the new in these surroundings.

The exhibition, “Navy Yard Off Map,” juried and curated by Artists Groups of Charlestown’s Julie Alailima and James Labeck, explores the unassuming and quiet beauty of the Charlestown Navy Yard, allowing artists to discover and present their ideas about the complex history.

The exhibition will be on view at the StoveFactory Gallery, 523 Medford St. through Sunday, July 18.

Berklee Summer in the City: Jason Ji

Jason Ji is a multi-genre fingerstyle guitarist and singer-songwriter from Australia, a one-man band playing a travel-sized guitar to its most resonating and ear-catching potential.

Ji will be performing at Osborn Triangle, 75 State St. at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21 and Wednesday, Aug. 18 as part of the Summer in the City concert series.

Berklee Summer in the City: The Thistle Brothers

The Thistle Brothers (Cameron and Devin) are a Boston-based brotherly duo making music for a cause. Each single that they release is connected to a charity and the money made from the singles (through streams, purchases and donations) is sent to the charities.

Their main influences include and stem from artists such as Stevie Wonder, the Beatles and Bob Dylan, placing the duo in a sonic space that blends folk, R&B and classic rock. They hope that their music can not only please the ears of their listeners, but also help to make the world a better place through the charities their music is connected to.

The Thistle Brothers will perform at City Hall Plaza at noon on Friday, July 23 as part of the Summer in the City concert series.

Explore Boston Harbor: A Waterfront-wide Scavenger Hunt       

Boston Harbor Now and partners will host “Explore Boston Harbor” scavenger hunts in six locations around the Waterfront: George’s Island, Spectacle Island, Charlestown, Downtown Boston, East Boston and South Boston through Friday, Oct. 1.

Each hunt has been carefully crafted to reflect the unique history and culture of the area and includes multiple choice, short-answer, and open-ended questions, as well as photo submissions. Participants can play by themselves or as a team and experience the harbor in a completely new way.

Yoga for adults                                                                                                         

Hands to Heart Center - Yoga for the People will present online yoga workshops for adults of all ages and levels in Charlestown from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays through Aug. 16.

Instruction will focus on the healthy balance of mind and body and include breathing exercises and guided meditation along with yoga poses.

Tween Time                                                                                                  

Tweens, ages 8-12, are invited to join in with the Boston Public Library for games and activities from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on Thursdays over Zoom. There will be something different every week and it’s a great way for kids to hang out with others their own age.

HarborFit: TRILLFIT Restore at the Charlestown Navy Yard        

End the day at the Charlestown Navy Yard with a fitness class from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays through Oct. 14 using restorative yogic principles as the guide, overlooking the spectacular views of Boston Harbor.

Friday Unwind: Gentle Yoga                                             

Unwind with Gentle Yoga – sponsored by Hands to Heart Center and the Boston Public Library – will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Fridays.

The yoga classes are geared for beginners with plenty of options and modifications for all bodies and ability levels.

The class will be live-streamed on YouTube/Hand to Heart Center – Yoga for the People.

This HIIT style class with Weigh Better U Personal Training and Group Fitness incorporates the use of body weight and free weights to give you a total body workout in less an hours' time. All done to upbeat fun music and can be modified for all levels of fitness and limitations.

– No Row, Full-Body Cardio – 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. on Saturdays; 5 to 5:45 p.m. on Mondays

Row House is going equipment-free and low-impact with this full-body cardio and strength class. Expect toning, elevated heart-rate and dynamic stretching to increase flexibility.

– Sunday Flow – 10 to 11 a.m. on Sundays

Rise and shine with Jenna Hill Yoga; this all-levels class is designed to integrate breath and movement, wake up your body and stimulate your mind through thoughtful sequencing. Leave energized and ready for the rest of your day; this class is appropriate for beginners or regular practitioners looking for a mindful practice.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston runs full-day fun-filled camps for children, ages 6-12. Campers participate in a diverse roster of activities, including arts and crafts, science and technology projects, sports, field trips and lots of swimming.

Charlestown Community Center Pool                               

The indoor pool at the Charlestown Community Center is open year-round with a variety of programming, such as open swim, family swim, swim lessons and a swim team.

The pool, which has special summer hours, is run by the Boston Centers for Youth & Families.

Summer hours: Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Free for Boston resident and nonresident youth.

Clougherty Pool                                                                   

The outdoor Clougherty Pool in Charlestown is open for recreational swimming and lap swimming. Summer hours are daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.

The pool is run by the Boston Centers for Youth & Families.

Adults: $15 (one-time registration free for entire summer); teens: $5; kids: free

Courageous Sailing has begun                                                                    

Courageous Sailing has begun – lots of laughing – lots of fun!

This nonprofit community sailing and youth development organization is committed to providing people of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to learn, sail and enjoy Boston Harbor from May through October.

The Courageous Sailing Centers are located at Pier 4, Charlestown Navy Yard; UMass Boston Dorchester Campus; and at the Jamaica Pond Boat House, 507 Jamaicaway in Jamaica Plain.

ASP Summer Youth Intensive ‘Much Ado about Nothing’   

For their 11th annual Summer Youth Intensive, the Actors' Shakespeare Project (ASP) youth will create, design, rehearse and perform Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado about Nothing at the Charlestown Working Theater, 442 Bunker Hill St.

Ages 13-19: Youth actors, stage managers, designers and technical crew are all welcome and encouraged to apply.

The youth ensemble will develop the production, guided by ASP company members and experienced teaching artists from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays through Aug. 1. Tech rehearsal: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 24.

Public performances will be the culmination of a month-long intensive collaboration among teens from a variety of Boston-area communities at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28 through Saturday, July 31; Strike Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1

USS Constitution tours resume

The USS Constitution at the Charlestown Navy Yard has resumed public visitation from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays through Sundays. Enjoy a free, guided tour of Old Ironsides or explore the top deck at your own pace.

The crew will continue to host a live virtual tour at 1 p.m. on Mondays.

USS Constitution Museum hours

The Constitution Museum at the Charlestown Navy Yard will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Bunker Hill Monument, Lodge and Museum

The Bunker Hill Museum – where visitors can explore more about the Battle of Bunker Hill, the construction of the Bunker Hill Monument, the memory of the battle and the history of the Charlestown neighborhood – is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays through Sundays.

The Bunker Hill Museum, the Lodge and the base of the Monument are accessible. The only means to reach the top of Bunker Hill Monument is via 294 stairs; at the top of the monument through 360-degree Live Webcams. 

Until further notice, the Bunker Hill Monument remains closed.

Future Readers Book Club and events

The Boston Public Library hosts the Future Readers Club for children, ages five years and younger, and their caregivers, with a goal of reading 1,000 books together before the child begins kindergarten.

Ronald McDonald House Wish List Drive

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of New England (RMHC NE) provides a comprehensive and supportive network of resources to children facing all pediatric illnesses and their families through Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles.

RMH Boston Harbor needs household items to support their families throughout their stay and ensure apartments are fully stocked with essential items at all times.

The Wishlist items can be found on Amazon or on the RMH Boston Harbor online wishlist and can be purchased anywhere.

Harvest on Vine Food Pantry appeal                                                        

The Harvest on Vine Food Pantry is requesting donations to help serve the increasing number of residents in need of assistance – more than 500 families per month, a 100 percent increase from last year.

Non-perishable foods along with toiletries and cleaning products can be dropped off at the Food Pantry, 49 Vine St. (Hayes Square); The Cooperative Bank, 201 Main St.; or the Parish Center, 46 Winthrop St. (by the Training Field).

Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Food distributions take place at 10 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month and at 2 p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month. The Pantry is also looking for volunteers to assist with distribution.

Boston Eats will provide free nutritious breakfast and lunch to city kids and youth – 18 years of age and under – through 2021. No ID or registration required.

Food program donations                                                                             

Donations are being accepted for the Food Insecurity Program at NEW Health, (332 Hanover St., Waterfront and 15 Tufts St., Charlestown) during this long, wintry season.

More than 100 families per month are being served, including children from the Eliot School, among others.

Disaster relief donations

The Charlestown Lions Club is collecting donations to support the Disaster Relief Fund. The donations will be used to benefit those affected by COVID-19 and other disasters.
