Plenty to love in this stunning South End home

BY BARBARA FORSTER/CORRESPONDENT
Although tucked into a nook on one side of the living area, the dining space is surprisingly large.

Direct-access deeded parking, two over-sized private decks, an in-house laundry facility, a South End location that is only steps to a myriad of city conveniences plus outstanding vistas are often on the list of house-hunters’ fantasies.

When you can have all that plus a stunning three-bedroom, two and a half bathroom, second and third-floor duplex, well, it might seem like a dream too good to be true. But it isn’t.

Julie Harrison, Arianna Brown and Mary Conner of Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty have listed this recently renovated 1,893-square-foot home at 429 Columbus Ave. for $2,350,000.

The impact of the sophisticated contemporary aesthetic happens immediately upon entering Unit 2. Impressive on their own, nine-foot-high flush doors with Bauhaus-style hardware make soaring 11-foot ceilings throughout this two-level home feel even higher. The result is an enormous expanse of “blank” wall in almost every room that has an art gallery “in waiting” so to speak.

The two-story wall in the open glass and steel stairwell is one example that is destined to make a dramatic statement.

Seven-inch wide oak plank flooring with a natural matte finish is a cohesive and complementary neutral element. The bonus is that it also enhances the overall contemporary architectural design, making it suitable for almost any decor and any type of artwork from paintings to sculptures.

Form and function to the nth degree rule in the galley kitchen on the upper level. Massive and fully open to the living and dining areas on one side and the family room on the other, this chef’s domain is an efficient working space with luxurious finishes.

An enormous center island with a white quartz countertop is not quite the showpiece of simplicity that it seems. This gigantic working space has a stainless-steel sink, storage all round and seating for three.

An abundance of cabinetry with a high-gloss white finish (and under mount lighting) stretches to the ceiling. One separate section has cupboards with pullout drawers that also go floor-to-ceiling. White quartz countertops, a matching backsplash and integrated paneling on the appliances create an elegant seamless look.

The stainless steel four-burner gas Wolf stove is an outstanding accent piece.

With a living area at each end of this floor, the placement of family room vs. formal living room is up for grabs. The bonus is that each one has its own personality.

The oversized space at the back of the home, for example, has a curved wall with a floor-to-ceiling window and a matching door that leads to the a grand-sized maintenance-free, covered deck with a classic iron railing. Full utilities that include a direct gas line for a grill, water and electricity make using this as an outdoor living room very doable. Built-in speakers are extras; the entire home has Sonos surround sound.

Although tucked into a nook, the dining area is surprisingly large, seating at least six people comfortably with a regulation table and chairs. Add a banquette and that number increases quickly.

Overlooking Columbus Avenue on the front end, the other living area with four windows in a wide bay area is the width of the unit. The focal point, however, is a sleek, flush mount gas fireplace flanked by beautiful built-in cabinets with interior lighting and glass- and closed-front doors that extend to the ceiling.

Two stylishly tiled walls in the half bathroom on this level are appealing, but the wall-mounted mini-sink in a floating vanity tends to garner immediate attention.

The lower level that houses the “private” living space is also thoughtfully planned and beautifully designed with luxurious finishes.

In the master suite, “C” is for choice – especially in the context of closet space. In addition to an almost regulation double, which of course, is fully built out, the sleeping chamber has a huge lighted walk-in “room” with built-in drawers, open shelving, cubbies and specialized hanging spaces.

“C” is also for chic in the king-bed size room where single-panel white plantation shutters on the three oversized windows make a statement even as they complement the silvery blue-gray grass cloth wall covering.

Two separate vanities with quartz countertops allow for personal space in the en suite loo while two storage cabinets that stretch to the ceiling above large niches are suitable for decorative displays, towels and/or personal products.

A striking textured tile accent wall behind one vanity continues into the step-in shower with a rain shower head, a hand-held spray and a frameless glass door. A shelf that extends its width holds an enormous amount of bathing necessities.

Two guest bedrooms – big and bigger – each have customized double closets. The smaller bedroom works well as an office, too.

The larger room offers wall-mounted floating side tables that flank the bed (your choice for queen or king) and is adjacent to a floor-to-ceiling niche with four built-in shelves. This room also has access to one of the private and maintenance-free decks.

Almost the width of the unit, the deck easily accommodates a table and several chairs. Access to water increases the flexibility of this outdoor space that leads directly to deeded parking behind the building.

A deep tub (with a shower combination that includes a shower head and hand-held body spray) is in the shared bathroom. Gleaming grey subway tile in the surround extends to an accent wall behind the DXV ceramic sink in the quartz-topped vanity. A high gloss finish that matches the kitchen cabinetry and a wall-mounted Duravit commode maintains the clean-line aesthetic.

Practicality was not overlooked, especially in the corridor to the master suite where every square foot was utilized. Two utility closets – one for techie equipment, the other for “house” systems – are here in addition to laundry facilities that include Electrolux stackable units.
