Amazing city views that include Boston's inner harbor and the Rose Kennedy Greenway along with luxurious amenities are the norm at the Residences at the InterContinental on the Waterfront. Unit 16G, a spacious corner unit, however, takes “standard” to new highs.
The New York design firm, Stedila Design, created a truly one-of-a-kind space with custom built-in units everywhere plus unique features and finishes that would border on extravagant were they not so well executed. The king-bed size sleeping chamber has custom built-in oak “Cerused” cabinetry, i.e., color was rubbed into the grain and then wiped off creating a distinctive finish that was popularized by French designed Michel Frank in the 1920s and ’30s. Besides being easy on the eyes, this feature is useful for decorative displays, books and/or storage.
With classic Madagascar cloth woven raffia on the walls, this bedroom has an oasis-like ambiance, but for a change of scenery, city views via the floor-to-ceiling window wall are always available.
The walk-in closet is big - we’re talking room size - and ready to accommodate an inordinate amount of clothing. Open shelving for bulky items is a plus.
The en suite bathroom is (as they say) a thing of beauty as well as a spacious escape. An oversized, fully tiled step-in shower with a frameless glass door is one bathing option, a separate soaking tub is another. Polished Thassos marble tops a long custom wood vanity with two sinks. While the privacy wall for the commode is a practical consideration, additional limestone finishes are sumptuous accents.

The views (via more floor-to-ceiling windows) are, of course, magnificent but this space is guaranteed to charm anyone who works or stays there. A full wall of built-in cabinetry, which is also “Cerused” oak and stretches to the ceiling, is itself extremely versatile offering desk/work space, closed storage and open shelving for books or decorative displays.
Large enough for a king size bed, this room also has several closets, including two doubles and a single. A full en suite bathroom is a bonus in terms of functionality. That this loo with an oversized fully (limestone) tiled glass enclosed shower goes way beyond being “attractive” is another plus.
Thoughtfully placed for easy access by guests when entertaining, the powder room offers more than convenience. Custom wallcovering (Crocodile Color Bordeaux from Clarence House) takes this wash room from ordinary to unforgettable. By the way, Boston paperhanger Greg Kahler handled the installation masterfully.
With laundry facilities (full-size stackable Asko washer and dryer units) “hidden” within a utility space, practical was not overlooked either.
Amenities such as one-car deeded parking in a heated garage, 24-hour concierge service and access to the hotel (the Intercontinental) spa/gym/pool, are also part of the package. One final perk: this is a pet-friendly building.
