Teen studio

The Museum of Fine Arts offers a specially designed program for teens, ages 13 to 18, with Autism Spectrum and Aspergers Disorders. “Beyond the Spectrum Teen Studio” is held once a month from 10:30 a.m. to noon on select Saturdays.

Each class focuses on a specific art topic and incorporates discussion, critical inquiry, and sketching in the galleries. Students then work independently on a project with guidance from an experienced instructor. All materials and Museum admission is included in the $9 per student fee.

ASD workshop

Has your child recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Boston Children's Hospital offers a 90-minute workshop for parents and caregivers to connect with each other and to learn more about your child's diagnosis, including: common recommendations, therapies and services plus resources and tips.

The next workshop is at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12. Other workshops scheduled will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12 and Oct. 3; 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 and 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.

The workshops are held at Boston Children's Hospital Longwood Campus at 300 Longwood Ave. in the Byers Conference Room B (in the Enders Building, to the right of the main hospital emergency department entrance).

‘2001: A Space Odyssey‘

The Museum of Fine Arts (465 Huntington Ave.) will feature “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968, directed by Stanley Kubrick, English with open captions) from 6:30 to 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 15.

The screening will take place on the Huntington Avenue lawn and is preceded by art making and lawn games starting 90 minutes before the film begins. Tickets are not required.

Bring a blanket or low chair (maximum 3 feet high), a picnic supper and nonalcoholic beverages to enjoy during the film. Beer, wine and snacks will be available for purchase.

Game Night

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum at 25 Evans Way will be hosting Game Night from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 15, part of Third Thursdays special events.

Try your luck at six-second games, museum trivia, and scavenger hunts or sit on the sidelines and watch the games begin.

This event is free for members and children, 17 years of age and younger; $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $10 for students.

Making memory vessels

“Beyond the Spectrum Teen Studio” (for teen, ages 13 to 18) will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 17 at The Museum of Fine Arts at 465 Huntington Ave.

The group will learn about the uses and importance of pottery vessels throughout history and in modern life, and then make their own vessels to hold an important memory.

Caregivers and parents are welcome, but are not required to attend.

All materials and Museum admission is included in the $9 per student fee.

Concerts in the courtyard

Every Wednesday through Aug. 28, the MFA (465 Huntington Ave.) will have live music in the courtyard. Door doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7:30 p.m.

Berklee concert series

The Berklee College of Music’s “Summer in the City” free concert series is now underway.

Music ranges from jazz to classical, Latin to funk and folk to world.

They will perform at the Harvard Longwood Campus, Medical School Quad (Fenway's Longwood Area) outdoors at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Aug. 29.

‘Reflection’ art exhibit

The Reflection art exhibit, presented by Mission Hill Artists Collective, will be on display at the Parker Hill Branch Library (1497 Tremont St.) through Aug 31.

This year’s theme gives the artists the opportunity to work and develop their creative piece using their chosen media – from photography to mixed media to painting – to explore their own definition of Reflection.

The Parker Hill Branch Library gallery hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

‘Big Plans: Picturing Social Reform’

The Hostetter Gallery at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 25 Evans Way, is hosting the exhibit “Big Plans: Picturing Social Reform” through Sept. 15.

This exhibit examines how landscape architects and photographers advocated for social reform in the development of Boston, New York, and Chicago in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Using city plans, maps, photographs, and archival materials, this exhibition presents the invention of landscape architecture as a progressive response to the social and environmental conditions for working-class immigrants, and invites visitors to consider how artists and designers are addressing the contemporary urban challenges and social conditions of our time.

Death café

The Fenway Community Center, 1282 Boylston St., #123, will host the Death Café from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, Oct. 30 and Dec. 11 for a lively, friendly roundtable conversation about death.

Death Café is a movement that started in Switzerland in 2004 and has spread all over the world (with thousands of Death Cafés held in more than 33 countries to date).

The idea is to bring people together over tea and chocolate cake and, by putting death squarely on the table, help each of us make the most of our lives.

Participants say that the experience is meaningful, therapeutic and often very joyful.

Free nights at MFA

Admission to the Museum of Fine Arts at 465 Huntington Ave. is complementary on Wednesdays from 4 to 9:30 p.m.

KidZone

KidZone is a free drop-in play group for all Fenway families that meet from 10 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of the month.

The program is offered by the Fenway Community Center, 1282 Boylston St., #123 (entrance on Jersey Street), in partnership with Operation P.E.A.C.E.

KidZone group activities are geared toward children, ages six years old and younger, but all children are welcome and all must be supervised by an adult.

Drawing in the Galleries

Every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m., the Museum of Fine Arts at 465 Huntington Ave. hosts an opportunity to sketch from live models and/or from objects in their collections. A drawing instructor provides insights on drawing technique and the artist-model relationship as it informs the creation of artwork. Limited drawing materials are provided to encourage spontaneous participation.

Gallery locations change each week. Check at the Sharf Visitor Center for current location.

This event is free with free admission Wednesdays at the MFA.

Tour ‘The Fens’

The Back Bay Fens – normally just called "The Fens," and part of Olmsted's Emerald Necklace of parks – has everything: wilderness areas, the Victory Gardens, ball fields, the Kelleher Rose Garden, war memorials, the meandering Muddy River and more.

Tours are offered on a variety of topics and at a variety of times until the end of October, and sometimes change at short notice due to weather conditions.

Tours are free, but a $10 donation per person is requested to help support ongoing maintenance and improvements of the area.

MFA ‘First Fridays’

The Museum of Fine Arts’ “First Fridays” festive cocktail and music event is held on the first Friday of each month from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Join is for fine art, music, bars featuring signature cocktails and tapas available for purchase.

Advanced tickets are strongly suggested as the event can sell out. Tickets are $25 for adult, $23 for students and seniors and free for museum members. Open Night at Coit Observatory

The Public Open Night is held at the Coit Observatory at Boston University, located at 725 Commonwealth Ave., right above the Astronomy Department. The stairwell to the Observatory is on the fifth floor next to room 520.

Starting times are 8:30 p.m. during the spring and summer and 7:30 p.m. during the fall and winter. The program lasts about an hour.

Tickets are available on eventbrite.com. If it's "sold out," right before the program starts and after all the ticketed guests that are present are admitted, any non-ticketed guests will be admitted until capacity is reached.

Open to everyone, this event is a chance for people to observe the night sky through telescopes and binoculars and see things they otherwise might not see while learning some astronomy as well.

The Open Nights are held most Wednesday evenings throughout the year, weather permitting.

Musical merriment

The Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave., offers a specially designed program for children on the Autism Spectrum, ages 8 to 12, once a month from 10:30 a.m. to noon (gathering in Room 159 by 10:20 a.m.) on select Saturdays, accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

“Beyond the Spectrum Kids” features a structured gallery tour led by an experienced instructor, followed by a creative art-making workshop. All materials and Museum admission is included in the $9 per student fee.

Many cultures use music to celebrate special events and bring communities together.
