Built in 1971, Glover Landing Condominiums are the Grande Dame of waterfront condo complexes in Marblehead. What is even more impressive (than age and/or its excellent reputation) is that the architects (Allan Chapman and Harold Goyette) had their eyes on the future (inside and out).

This spacious penthouse unit has an unusual perk in the “condo complex” world. Practically no visible neighbors. The reason is that the architects strategically staggered the buildings to avoid window-to-window contact — a reality that is especially noticeable when enjoying the fabulous views of Marblehead Harbor and beyond.

That same thoughtfulness is demonstrated inside, too. Interior layouts, especially in this penthouse, are decidedly contemporary. The main level, for example, has an open-flow living-dining room with access to the great outdoors. In fact, creating an entirely open concept kitchen-living/dining room is an easy task. Simply remove a half wall.

But all that is getting ahead of the story.

A few inside details

The flow of gleaming hardwood flooring from the front door and throughout the spacious open the living-dining area directs attention to the “window” wall at the end of the room. OK, so it’s really full glass pane sliders plus a matching sidelight that also open to a large deck with an incredible, head-on view of the harbor, Gloucester and Boston.

Admittedly the view is mesmerizing but looking up reveals another innovative element in this room: a soffit divides the space into separate areas — each one is large — without any physical obstructions, i.e., interior walls.

Currently, the dining area is adjacent to the kitchen. A half wall with a countertop works as a server when dining (be it formal or casual) or as a breakfast bar for two. This also provides extra prep space when in the kitchen.

Speaking of the kitchen, this U-shaped space with stainless steel appliances has an ample amount of attractive cabinetry.

For added convenience, this level has a half bathroom with a sweet corner sink plus a handy double closet, which is great for coats and/or storage.

A hidden gem, however, is the deep closet tucked under the staircase. Most unobtrusive, this is handy for all kinds of stuff.

Time to go up

Although the vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom is impressive, the view is amazing. Extra-large windows provide the same panoramic view (with Gloucester, Marblehead Harbor and Boston) as the main floor but seemingly more vibrant. Abbott Hall is included in the view from a window on a side wall.

This king-size chamber also has an extra-wide double closet. Use the built-in floor- to-ceiling bookcases adjacent to the doorway and over it as a mini library and/or for decorative displays.

A honed marble vanity top is definitely an elegant touch in the full bathroom that also has a tub/shower ensemble with a tile surround. The built-in medicine cabinet is both practical and appealing.

By the way, this loo also has laundry facilities: a full-size stackable Bosch washer and dryer.

Size-wise, the second bedroom is a strong contender to be “the” master bedroom.

Yes, it’s that big. This room also has an extraordinarily large double closet, a single one with six open shelves — great for shoes, sweaters and such — and a soaring vaulted ceiling. Plantation shutters on the two large windows (as well as hardwood flooring) add dashes of elegance.

A couple other perks are part of the package, too: a separate storage unit and access to a private beach with available storage for dinghies, kayaks, paddle boards beach chairs, etc. plus a function room and a dock. Let’s not forget parking.
